Why can't humans focus more on the following issues?

Mainly over population and inequality, and the necessity of becoming a resource based society on a global level. I think these need to be tended to more than anything else. Shouldn't all of the "greatest minds" of the world come together to solve these issues. I think that coming together as a whole in relation to these issues would help create much more harmony amongst the human species. Why can't people realize this? I think the Venus Project is a great idea and can probably help with a lot of our problems, but not all of them. We need to work together in promoting and adhering to a plan that is geared toward providing the greater good for all of humanity. The way we are headed now is poisonous and reckless. We are truly headed for disaster and civil unrest in my opinion.
