How do I contain my hair while growing it?

I've had a buzzcut for 3 years now I guess, and I just recently started growing my hair back. It's about 1cm long i'd guess, but it goes straight into the air like a porcupine, it's growing over my ears and the sideburns have gotten big. It's still so short I cant really have a haircut I guess, and I want to continue growing it. What do?
